Topics & Responsibilities

One of the responsibilities of the Consortium Steering Committee (CSC) is to determine which topics the project should focus on. The CSC has regular meetings throughout the course of the project to decide which subjects are of greatest priority and relevance. Members of the project then explore these subjects and exchange information on the current state of practice and state of the art.

Current Thoughts on Areas which Autosim Should Cover

Integration Best Practice Topics

  • CAD-Integrated CAE Tools
  • Simulation data management (SDM/PDM)
  • Data integration (CAD/CAE/CAM/CAT)
  • Collaborative product development

 Integration Breakthrough Technology Areas

  • Concept simulation models
  • Knowledge data mining and assessment of data
  • Automatic model generation
  • Homogenous vs. heterogeneous model environment
  • Multi-disciplinary optimisation and multi-physics

Materials  - Subject Areas Considered by the Project

  • Best practice - is it already in use?
  • Best practice - when to use it?
  • Breakthrough technologies - how to find them?

Materials  - Areas giving difficulty to automotive CAE engineers

  • New Ultra High Strength Steels require new constitutive models
  • Strain Rate Sensitivity for all materials (short duration transient loading)
  • Composites (all load cases) for material properties, modes, failure or damage connections, and the even effects of forming
  • Failure/Fracture/Damage involving most materials for all load cases; understanding the differences and how to best model them in CAE
  • Effects of Forming for all materials for short duration loading and non-metals for other cases; effect of assembly also highlighted, particularly for metals.
  • Choice of Constitutive Models for non-metals—complexity vs. ease of use
  • Modelling Connections for all materials and most load cases

Improving Confidence in the Use of Simulation

  • Current engineering perceptions and concerns in CAE confidence
  • Validation - physical model
  • Staff training - human resources and organisation
  • Material data - data validity
  • Mesh discretization - digital model
